Four days to build an empire

This week is “Goals Week.” Not to get too melodramatic about it, but the next four days will, if I can manage to overcome my robust and well-developed procrastination abilities, be transitional for my budding entrepreneurial skills. Or skillz, as it were.

I’ve set lots of goals before, but they always fade away as soon as I write them down. That’s part of the reason I’ve never really followed through. To a natural slacker, goals are easily dismissed because, hey, who’s in charge here? Me. Who’s writing the goals? Me. That makes me the boss. And the boss says “I’m going to piss away my time doing anything but the thing I just told myself to do, and there ain’t nothin’ anybody can do about it.”

This time is a little bit different, though. I’ve reached the wall, as far as moving goes. I like helping people and the steel-cable taut body hard, daily physical labor gives you, but as a long-term career? No way. If I have to hear “I added a couple of items to the packing list” one more time, I’ll just snap. And navigating DC traffic on a daily basis? It’s a wonder I haven’t just parked my truck in an intersection during rush hour, hopped in the pickup bed, stripped, and danced a crazy jig until Secret Service batoned my naked body to the hot pavement.

A couple of days ago I was this close to doing just that, which tells me it’s time to take MTB to Phase II: Expansion.

Past time, actually. Long past time.

Oh, and then there’s the marketing consultation business…

So, I took four days off, and that was a Herculean feat in itself. So many prospects calling for help…so much money to be made…

Anyway, my goal this week is to determine what I need to do to expand the business. I already have a pretty hefty list of To-Do items, but those are easy compared to the legal requirements I have to finalize. Namely, what kind of business is MTB? A property carrying business? Moving? Courier? I don’t know, exactly, but I have to nail that down ASAP if I ever want to escape the little prison I’ve built for myself. I need other dudes doing the moving so I can work on other things. It’s awfully difficult to build a website and market a service when you’re trying to scooch a sleeper sofa through a narrow doorway and down three flights of stairs.

So, here we go. Four days to figure out whether my little pickup-based company needs to comply with the same laws and regs as the big guys. Four days to put a plan in place for expansion and recruitment. Four days to build (or at least plan) the marketing business.

Four days.

Here we go.
